Marking invisible codes on vial caps for internal traceability and patient safety

Track and Trace

To prevent product mix-up and ensure internal traceability, vials and injectable products are marked with an identifier, most commonly a DataMatrix barcode.

In relation to this practice the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked for an innovative marking solution for terminally sterilized injectable products keeping the vials ferrule and cap overseal blank to reserve for critical safety messages as this is the area that is highly visible to healthcare practitioners.

Ultraviolet Inks

Ultraviolet (UV) inks are an excellent solution for pharmaceutical manufacturers who are looking for an invisible traceability feature. These inks come in variants known as “fluorescing” and “curing”.

Videojet provides a selection of UV fluorescing inks for both Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) as well as Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) printing technologies, offering great adhesion to a variety of substrates enabling discreet codes for product traceability.
