Produce Traceability Initiative Aims to Have Electronic Traceability for Every Case of Produce by 2012

The Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI) – launched by the Produce Marketing Association, Canadian Produce Marketing Association and the United Fresh Produce Association in October 2007 – is designed to help the produce industry develop standards for traceability by building a common framework to identify produce across the supply chain.

Current deadlines: 2011 and 2012

By the end of 2011, PTI recommends completion of three milestones:

  • Product growers and packers are ready to apply human readable information specifying GTIN and lot number to every case of produce shipped.
  • Product growers and packers are ready to encode the GTIN and lot number in a GS1-128 bar code for accurate scanning to be recorded by buyers and receivers.

  • Buyers, receivers and subsequent handlers should be ready to read bar codes and electronically store GTIN and lot number information from each case received.

By the end of 2012, PTI recommends that all buyers, receivers and subsequent handlers be ready to read and store GTIN and lot number information for all outbound cases.

Videojet can help you with your current traceability system and implement the Produce Traceability Initiative Milestones with our inline case printing solutions:

Tough Production Environments

Packaging fruit and vegetable products can be challenging in terms of the production environment: high humidity in canning applications, low temperatures in frozen fruits and vegetable packaging and dusty conditions when packaging fresh produce. Videojet offers printers that withstand these challenges reliably and deliver consistent codes on your products. The Videojet 1000 Line small character ink jet printers with their IP65 housings and Clean Flow™ printhead cleaning system keep your production line up and running with longer runs between cleanings. The Videojet DataFlex Plus thermal transfer overprinter fully integrates into your production lines and operates seamlessly, even in tough conditions.

Ease of Operation

Videojet’s printers come with an simple to use operator interface, making print job generation and daily jobs an easy task. Even operators who haven’t used Videojet’s printers before will be efficient with them in a very short period of time. Together with the Smart Cartridges™ on Videojet’s 1000 Line small character ink jet printers, potential mistakes are reduced to an absolute minimum.

While our DataFlex Plus printers are often fully integrated into your packaging machines, our 1000 Line printers come with built-in handles to offer a mobile solution that can be used on different production lines – just where you need to code and mark your fruit and vegetable packages.

Here are a number of examples of print on a variety of fruit and vegetable products and with different technologies.
